VICTORIA MAK

Honestly, I don’t even know what to say about myself. I grew up around food. My Dad, Mingo, was always emphasizing the importance of having a good meal every night. When my Mom, PuiPui, was pregnant with me, my parents owned a sammich shop. PuiPui attributes my desire to cook and hospitality to this fact. I have memories of wearing my Mickey Mouse makeshift waitress apron and peeling and serving Asian Pears (Sa Lei) for Mingo and my brother. Mingo was probably the larger driving factor. I would spend Saturdays just being a two-man potsticker making team and always stand next to the Wok asking what he’s doing. Food was something Mingo and I shared. He taught me culinary perfection was important. Mingo said “When I die, at least you guys will always remember the things I cooked for you.” He was right. I constantly regret not asking for more recipes and understanding all the methods to his madness. Food keeps people together and makes you reminisce back to every time you tasted those flavors. It just makes you kinda smile.

Over the years I guess my passion developed. It’s transitioned from being about food to overall “domesticated” traits. I craft, thrift, think up fat kid recipes, have food obsessions, and pretty much a plethora of random things going on in my life. I have my boyfriend, White Man (he calls me China Girl) and dog, Hopscotch. They are the lucky winners of the mess I create with all my projects.
